
Amber is fossilised resin. Around 40 million years ago it dripped from conifers in a forest that stood across northern Europe, was carried by rivers into an ancient sea, and has lain in the sediments of the Baltic ever since. Early in the morning after a stormy night, before anyone else has walked the beach, the odds are highest.
One reliable test: amber floats in heavily salted water and sinks in fresh water. It feels warm and light in the hand, and it glows faintly blue under a UV lamp. It can be confused with pale glass or chert, which are heavier. The amber museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten shows what genuine pieces look like, some with insects trapped in the resin for forty million years.
A safety warning that is meant seriously: white phosphorus washes up on the Baltic now and then, a residue from the Second World War. When wet it looks deceptively like amber, but once it dries it ignites by itself and burns at over eight hundred degrees. Never put a suspected piece damp into your pocket. Carry anything doubtful in a metal container, away from your body. Otherwise the rule is simple: collecting small amounts for personal use on an open beach is fine, but not in nature reserves or the core zones of the national parks.
