Bolzano sits where three rock worlds meet. The city itself stands on Bolzano quartz porphyry, a volcanic sheet more than 280 million years old from the Permian, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. To the north and east rise the Dolomites, whose pale walls are built from Triassic reef limestone and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. Between them, rivers and glaciers carved deep valleys.
For a long time the ore here came from great height. At Schneeberg, in Italian Monteneve, miners worked lead and zinc from medieval times onward, one of the highest mines in the Alps, closed only in 1985. Copper came from Prettau in the Ahrntal valley, and fluorite and barite from several smaller pits around the Adige valley. On the spoil heaps of these old workings collectors still find galena, sphalerite, pyrite and fluorite, where access is allowed.
For fossils, South Tyrol reads like a textbook. The San Cassiano Formation of the Dolomites holds exceptionally well preserved Triassic marine animals, and the Stuores Wiesen meadows near San Cassiano are the global reference point for the start of the Carnian stage. The Bletterbach gorge near Aldino exposes Permian layers with reptile tracks. The South Tyrol Museum of Nature in Bolzano puts it all in order, and a few streets away lies Ötzi, the 5,300 year old man from the ice. orecast maps the documented find and mine points within reach.
Caution is not optional up here. Old adits at Schneeberg are lethal, and protected geosites such as the Bletterbach must not be hammered. Italy has its own collecting law, and significant finds belong to the state. In the high mountains, weather and altitude forgive no carelessness.

Treasure hunting, law & safety
We'd rather underclaim than oversell: a promising geology is no guarantee, and you won't find invented numbers here. Digging and collecting are regulated across Europe and usually need a permit, and protected monuments and nature reserves are off-limits.
Frequently asked questions
Can I dig or collect finds near Bolzano (South Tyrol)?
Digging and collecting finds are regulated in most of Europe and usually need a permit; protected monuments and nature reserves are off-limits. orecast shows where protected/historical sites lie so you can check the local rules first. It is information, not a permit.
Where can I find gold near Bolzano (South Tyrol)?
Around Bolzano (South Tyrol), gold is at most plausible as river placer (hobby-scale panning), not a documented deposit unless flagged on the map. orecast clearly separates documented finds from merely plausible geology, and it never promises gold.
What minerals and raw materials occur near Bolzano (South Tyrol)?
Within 40 km we list 23 documented mineral/ore points. The most common nearby are: Zink, Fluorit, Blei, Kupfer, Pyrit.
Are there fossils near Bolzano (South Tyrol)?
Yes, 938 scientific fossil localities are recorded within 40 km (with geological age and formation).
Is digging dangerous near Bolzano (South Tyrol)?
Possibly: former war zones can hold unexploded ordnance. Where a site is flagged with the ☢️ warning, never dig, it is a danger to life; contact the bomb-disposal service if in doubt.
