Around Solnhofen and Eichstätt you are not looking for ore. You are looking for impressions in stone. The Solnhofen limestone formed in the late Jurassic, about 150 million years ago, in shallow, oxygen-starved lagoons behind tropical sponge reefs. The lime mud was so fine, and the water at the bottom so hostile to life, that feathers, jellyfish and even the final tracks of dying horseshoe crabs survived. Those death marches, with the animal still lying at the end of its trail, exist almost nowhere else.
The stone became famous through a find made in 1861. Near Langenaltheim the first Archaeopteryx came to light, the best known link between reptile and bird, and a second skeleton later turned up near Eichstätt. Add pterosaurs, the small predatory dinosaur Compsognathus, fish, ammonites and dragonflies, often complete and preserved more finely than almost anywhere on Earth. The rock was originally quarried as lithographic printing stone and as flooring, and the fossils came off as a by-product.
You can both see them and split them yourself. The Jura Museum in Eichstätt Castle and the Bürgermeister-Müller Museum in Solnhofen display the originals, including Archaeopteryx slabs. At the visitor quarries in Solnhofen and Mühlheim you may pay a fee, split slabs and keep common finds such as fish, crustaceans and plant remains. orecast lists the documented fossil sites within reach, each with its geological age and formation.
A few things are non-negotiable. Scientifically important vertebrate finds must be reported and may fall under the Bavarian Schatzregal, a law that assigns significant finds to the state rather than the finder. Inside the show quarries the operator's rules apply, and elsewhere you need the landowner's permission. Nobody gets rich here, but a Jurassic fish you split yourself beats the entrance fee.

Treasure hunting, law & safety
We'd rather underclaim than oversell: a promising geology is no guarantee, and you won't find invented numbers here. Digging and collecting are regulated across Europe and usually need a permit, and protected monuments and nature reserves are off-limits.
Frequently asked questions
Can I dig or collect finds near Solnhofen/Eichstätt?
Digging and collecting finds are regulated in most of Europe and usually need a permit; protected monuments and nature reserves are off-limits. orecast shows where protected/historical sites lie so you can check the local rules first. It is information, not a permit.
Where can I find gold near Solnhofen/Eichstätt?
Around Solnhofen/Eichstätt, gold is at most plausible as river placer (hobby-scale panning), not a documented deposit unless flagged on the map. orecast clearly separates documented finds from merely plausible geology, and it never promises gold.
What minerals and raw materials occur near Solnhofen/Eichstätt?
Within 25 km we list 9 documented mineral/ore points. The most common nearby are: Ton, Tonstein, Kies und Sand, sonstige Metamorphite, Kalkstein und Dolomitstein, sonstige Industrieminerale.
Are there fossils near Solnhofen/Eichstätt?
Yes, 405 scientific fossil localities are recorded within 25 km (with geological age and formation).
Is digging dangerous near Solnhofen/Eichstätt?
Possibly: former war zones can hold unexploded ordnance. Where a site is flagged with the ☢️ warning, never dig, it is a danger to life; contact the bomb-disposal service if in doubt.
