Kassel sits on the edge of an old volcanic field. During the Tertiary, around 12 million years ago, basalt rose repeatedly from below and spread as a hard cap over the softer sediments beneath. The Habichtswald hills west of the city and the rounded summits around it are its remains, and on one of them the Hercules monument towers over the Wilhelmshöhe hill park. Where the basalt is broken you can sometimes spot green grains of olivine, fragments of the Earth's mantle that the lava dragged up with it.

The Kupferschiefer is also a fossil bed: it holds petrified fish and plants from the Zechstein sea, finely preserved on the black slabs.

Old, long-disused basalt quarries in the Habichtswald let you study the volcanic rock, and on the spoil of the former copper mines you may find ore fragments tarnished green and blue. The Fulda carries pebbles from the uplands in its gravel.
