Video: Real dragons flew over Bavaria — Germany's pterosaurs

A warm afternoon over a shallow lagoon in what is now Bavaria. Suddenly a shadow darkens the water — not a bird, something far older. A leathery wing, stretched over a single, incredibly long finger. The first flier the earth ever produced: a pterosaur. Our episode tells of the animals that conquered the skies long before the first bird sang.

Neither dinosaur nor bird

Pterosaurs were not dinosaurs and not birds. They were reptiles that conquered the sky millions of years before the first bird. In the limestone quarries of Solnhofen one was found for the first time — a bizarre skeleton no one could place for a long while: a creature with wings but with teeth. It was named Pterodactylus, wing-finger, and it was the first pterosaur science ever described. The fine Solnhofen limestone preserved the impossible: not only the delicate bones, but the imprint of the leathery wing membrane itself.

How a reptile learned to fly

How did a reptile take off at all? The secret lay in its build. The bones were hollow like a bird's, thin as paper and yet astonishingly strong. Their wings were not feathers but a taut skin, stretched from the body to the tip of a single, enormously elongated finger — a living sail. Over the lagoon they hunted in low flight, brushing the water with their jaws and snapping at fish. Some carried a long steering tail, like a kite. Over millions of years they became the undisputed rulers of the sky, in hundreds of forms, from the size of a sparrow upward.

The lagoon of Solnhofen

Why do we find them so well preserved in Bavaria of all places? In the late Jurassic a chain of shallow, warm lagoons lay here, cut off from the open sea by reefs and sandbanks. At the bottom of these basins the water was salty, oxygen-poor and utterly still — hostile to scavengers, but ideal for preservation. Whatever sank in here was not torn apart but slowly covered by the finest lime mud. And so things survived that would long since have perished elsewhere: not only bones, but jellyfish, insect wings, feathers, and the paper-thin flight membrane of the pterosaurs.

That is why Solnhofen is one of the most important fossil sites in the world. The same fine limestone that preserved Archaeopteryx also held the pterosaurs — both shared the same sky over the same lagoon. In this water fish hunted and ammonites drifted past, while above the surface the winged reptiles dived for prey. The diversity of forms was enormous: hundreds of species are known today, from the size of a sparrow to later giants, with teeth or without, with a long steering tail or a very short one. Every slab of stone from the quarries is thus a window into a complete ecosystem, in which the pterosaurs were only the most striking inhabitants. Without this special lagoon we would know almost nothing of the earth's first fliers — it would be the only place where their fragile build could save itself into the stone at all.

The giant from Romania

But those were only the small ones. At the end of the age of dinosaurs, evolution produced pterosaurs that burst every known scale. Imagine an animal with the wingspan of a small aircraft, standing as tall as a giraffe — and it could fly. One of the largest lived in present-day Romania: Hatzegopteryx. On an island without large predatory dinosaurs, it was the hunter at the top. And it did not hunt from the air alone: on folded wings it stalked across the ground, like a stork out of a nightmare, and devoured whatever it could seize.

Such giants belonged to the azhdarchids, a group of late pterosaurs with an extremely long neck and a mighty beak. They were no clumsy gliders but moved as surely on the ground as in the air, and could swallow prey the size of a small dinosaur. That an animal with the wingspan of an aircraft could take off at all it owed to the same trick as the little pterosaurs of Solnhofen: hollow, extremely light bones and a wing of taut skin. It was lightweight construction perfected, millions of years before humans invented it — and proof of how far evolution could push a single good idea, flight, given the time and a whole continent to work with.

The end of the rulers of the sky

For a hundred and fifty million years the sky was theirs — longer than there have been birds to this day. Then, sixty-six million years ago, it all ended: the same impact that wiped out the dinosaurs carried off the rulers of the sky as well. What remained are imprints in stone — paper-thin wings pressed into Bavarian limestone for eternity. Long before the first bird sang, dragons circled over Europe, and the stone remembers to this day.
